3D CRT

What is 3D conformal radiation therapy?

3D conformal radiation therapy (3D CRT) is a type of external beam radiation which can be used to treat and/or reduce the symptoms associated with cancer. With this precise treatment, 3D images of the tumor are integrated into an advanced computer system to help develop an exact plan for delivering radiation to the target area. The goal of 3D CRT is to maximize the dose to the cancer while minimizing the exposure of normal, healthy tissue.

How is 3D CRT delivered?

3D CRT is delivered using a machine located outside the body called a linear accelerator. Each day the patient is situated in exactly the same position on the treatment table prior to starting the actual therapy. Once the patient is in the correct treatment position, the linear accelerator rotates around the patient’s body aiming multiple beams of radiation from many different angles to the targeted site.

How long will treatment last?

The exact number of treatments and the overall duration of therapy will depend on many factors such as the type of cancer and the location and size of the target area and the goals for treatment. Therapy may be delivered once or twice a day, five days a week with each session lasting around 15-30 minutes.

Which types of cancer can be treated with 3D CRT?

  • Head and neck cancer
  • Breast cancer
  • Lung cancer
  • Gynecologic cancer
  • Prostate cancer
  • Lymphoma
  • Colorectal cancer
  • Brain tumors

What are the side effects associated with 3D CRT?

Generally the side effects of radiation therapy are mild, especially with the use of 3D CRT which reduces side effects by minimizing the exposure of surrounding, normal tissue. Side effects may vary depending on the specific area receiving radiation and may include:

  • Fatigue
  • Skin irritation
  • Loss of appetite

Side effects usually peak within the second or third week of treatment. Patients experiencing discomfort should communicate any questions or concerns to the treatment team. Most of the side effects can be managed through medications or changes in diet.
